The concepts in more detail as they relate to the library infrastructure : where the chaos really begins
FlexibilityFlexibility enhances our ability to meet a range of need and frees us from a routine recipe approach. Flexible scheduling is allows for the maximum use of the library spaces with a goal specific focus. It also ensures we are able to be responsive to last minute inspirations.
Virtual and physical spacesOur students don't see the same delineation between virtual and physical environment so our library design should reflect this. The technology (iPads, laptops, desktops, cameras and personal devices) should be available to slot into the learning environment taking the focus off the technology itself and directing it to the inquiry at hand.
DifferentiationWe have 430 students who have 430 different ways of accessing library services and resources. For our physical environ-ment to be differentiated means we need a range of spaces that cater for a range of student needs. Quiet nooks, soft spaces, small group and class areas, seemless technology integration (data points, power points), display areas and presentation areas.
AccessThe non-fiction shelves have been taken out of rows and been reconfigured in a snake-like line dividing the library into a range of spaces and minimising crowding in isles when classes are searching for books.
Personal agencyBy this we mean that students can feel confident to take action themselves. This includes consulting with the librarian but also involves self motivated access to library spaces and resources. They can book spaces, use spaces and feel comfortable freely accessing library resources. This means that the circulation desk and library administration is not the centre of the library or the first thing a student sees when they enter. The circulation desk is not a great "service" wall of separation but low and easy to approach. No hiding behind a desk or tucked away in a room.
CollaborationThe circulation desk should be open and approachable with short waiting times. The spaces should allow the librarians to readily get up from their desk to be a part of the life of the library, to work alongside students anywhere in the library that is appropriate (not from behind a "reference desk").
DiversityStudents should be telling a range of stories about their library experience. It could be their quiet retreat, it could be their place to meet friends, it could be a place for class activities, it could be many things.
ParticipationLibrary furniture should be movable and flexible. Group work, individual study, class areas should be configured to allow maximum flexibility depending on the needs at hand. The students should participate in this process of arranging their own environment - shifting tables, setting up cushions, moving chairs together or apart.
